Cupping : Not Just for Professional Athletes
When this picture of Michael Phelps first appeared in Huffington Post, our phones couldn't stop ringing. Patients are asking for cupping and its many benefits.
Cupping has many therapeutic uses and its not just for athletes. In fact, if a patient were to come in for pain, cupping will certainly be in their treatment plan.
BUT, cupping is NOT just for pain. I have used this technique to help patients with the following conditions :
Cough with or without phlegm
Shingles
Pneumonia
Asthma
Allergies
Pain conditions that would benefit from cupping are as follows :
Rotator Cuff Syndrome/ Adhesive Capsulitis/ Frozen Shoulder
Scoliosis
Low back pain
Headaches
Neck pain
How long would the cupping marks last?
It depends on the patient’s situation. They generally disappear after 4 days.
Why are some cupping marks darker than others?
That is a reflection of how much stagnation i.e. poor circulation in the diseased area. With repeated cupping therapy, the same area will not be as dark as the first session, indicating that you are healing well.
How often should I do cupping therapy?
Depending on the need for cupping therapy, we generally do it once every 2-3 weeks. Once conditions have resolved, patient can use cupping therapy as and when the need arises.
