Hormone Testing Methods

There are several ways a doctor can test a patient's hormone level and each one listed below have their strengths and limitations:

  1. Serum - blood is collected from patients and this test is ideal for the collection of thyroid hormones panel and fasting insulin e.g. HA1C.

  2. Salivary - patient spits into vials that can be collected on the same day at different intervals e.g. Adrenal Stress Index (ASI) or over several weeks (Female Hormone Panel fertility testing). This test measures free hormone levels and patient may need to avoid eating, drinking or brushing teeth prior to spitting.

  3. Urine - patient need to collect urine over the course of 24 hours to allow measurement of unbound hormones and metabolites e.g. melatonin and growth hormone.

Why Do We Need to Measure Your Hormone Levels?

Any test provide us with a snapshot of how your body is functioning at that point in time. Chronic health conditions can be addressed with nutrition and lifestyle changes.

Typically, in a period of 3 months, we would retest patients' panels. Any changes in the results will indicate if our treatment regimen has been effective in helping your condition.
