Miscarriage - Good or Bad?
Miscarriage can be a setback in your fertility journey. When patients come for fertility consult after one or repeated miscarriage, I tend to ask them these set of questions :
1) Timing of miscarriage
A miscarriage at 6 weeks will tell a ‘different story’ than a miscarriage that happens at 20 weeks.
2) How did it happen?
Did the miscarriage happen after a trauma or stressful event?
3) Do you have any co-morbidities?
Do you suffer from PCOS, fibroids, cancer, diabetes or thyroid issues.? This will impact our treatment protocols and strategy.
4) Maternal age
Some women may want to get pregnant immediately after a miscarriage especially if they are at an advance maternal age. We generally recommend that you wait 3 months to give your body and hormones a chance to recover.
5) Changes on menses post miscarriage
Some women need 1-3 cycles to get their menses back to normal. Some reported changes in cycle length, flow days and a lighter or heavier period.
6) How are you doing emotionally?
Perhaps in addition to acupuncture, you may find it helpful to talk to a therapist or engage in other self care modalities to get you through.
Our treatment strategy would be to help you get healthy, increase your body’s resilience so that it can carry the pregnancy to term and destress.
Once pregnant, patients are encouraged to get weekly treatments till you pass 13 weeks. Thereafter, treatments reduce to once monthly.
